“White, Tall, Top, Masculine, Muscular”: Narratives of Intracommunity Stigma in Young Sexual Minority Men’s Experience on Mobile Apps
November 2021
Young sexual minority men are socialized in a larger cultural context of racism, misogyny, and pressures to conform to a particular body standard. Using data from the Generations Study, this study examines the experiences of sexual minority men, ages 19-25, on mobile apps and the perpetuation of intracommunity stigma.
Highlights
Mobile apps provide a place where sexual minority men experience intracommunity stigma.
Experiences of stigma within the community include body type, race/ethnicity, gender expression, and sexual position.
Sexual minority men did not relate experiences of stigma related to one’s HIV status, substance use, and social class.
