LGBT Discrimination, Subnational Public Policy, and Law in the United States

This chapter describes the existence and impact of discrimination against LGBT people and provides an overview of existing state laws and policies that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It was published in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Politics in January 2020.

Highlights
Although public acceptance of LGBT people and LGBT rights is growing in the US, discrimination against LGBT people continues to be widespread.
In 28 states, LGBT people lack statutory protections from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations.
Continued efforts are required to ensure that LGBT people are protected from discrimination no matter where they live.
