Report
Male Role Models, Gender Role Traits, and Psychological Adjustment
Adolescents of the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study
June 2012
This report from the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study assesses the influence of male role models on the lives of adolescents who were conceived through donor insemination by lesbian mothers. It was published in Gender & Society in June 2012.
Highlights
Half of the adolescents indicated that they had important male role models in their lives.
The most frequently mentioned types of role models were friends, uncles, and biological fathers or donors.
The absence of male role models did not adversely affect the psychological adjustment of adolescents raised by lesbian mothers.
