Lesbian and Heterosexual Two-Parent Families

Adolescent–parent relationship quality and adolescent well-being
February 2014

This report compares psychological adjustment, substance use, and family relationship quality in adolescent children of continuously coupled lesbian mothers and heterosexual parents in The Netherlands. It was published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies in February 2014.

Adolescents with coupled lesbian mothers had higher self-esteem and fewer conduct problems than adolescents with coupled heterosexual parents.
Adolescents did not show differences in how they perceived their relationship with their parents based on family type.
Across indicators of psychological adjustment, adolescents with coupled lesbian mothers were comparable to those with heterosexual parents.
