Cardiovascular Disease in a Population-Based Sample of Transgender and Cisgender Adults

Using data from the TransPop study, this report examines the prevalence and correlates of smoking, select cardiovascular disease conditions, and venuous thromboembolism in cisgender and transgender adults aged 40+ years. It appeared in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine in August 2021.

Highlights
Transgender women have more than three times greater risk of venous thromboembolism, compared to cisgender women.
A greater proportion of transgender than cisgender people were current smokers, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Transgender people had greater odds of discrimination, psychological distress, and adverse childhood experiences.
