Examining Variation in Surveying Attitudes on Same-Sex Marriage

A meta-analysis
May 2015

This study examines variations in the results of recent public opinion polls on same-sex marriage. Using meta-analysis, it explores differences among organizations and the wording of questions. The report was published in Public Opinion Quarterly in June 2015.

Highlights
A majority of the public supported same-sex marriage in 2014 and deviations can be explained by question framing and sampling.
Questions that focus on same-sex marriage garner less support than questions about legal recognition of marriages for same-sex couples.
With some exception, most national polls measuring support for same-sex marriage tend not to be influenced by systematic
attributes of the agency.
