The Life and Afterlife of Gay Neighborhoods

Join us for a discussion of the new book, “The Life and Afterlife of Gay Neighborhoods,” with co-editors Alex Bitterman and Daniel B. Hess. The book provides a framework for contemplating the future form and function of gay neighborhoods by examining their growth during the 1960s and 1970s, durability during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and current plateau since 2000.

The editors will talk about the history and future of gay neighborhoods in the context of issues such as gentrification, weakening social stigma, and enhanced rights for LGBTQ+ people. In addition, they will discuss the influence of generational differences between baby boomer pioneers and millennials who favor broad inclusivity on possible trajectories for the future of these important LGBTQ+ urban spaces.

The Williams Institute is proud to co-sponsor this event with UCLA’s Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies and the LGBTQ Campus Resource Center.
