Gender Identity Disparities in Criminal Victimization

National Crime Victimization Survey, 2017–2018
March 2021

Using pooled data from the 2017 and 2018 National Crime Victimization Survey, researchers estimate the prevalence of personal and household victimizations among transgender people in the United States. It appeared in the American Journal of Public Health in March 2021.

 

Highlights
Transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent victimization.
Households with a transgender person had higher rates of property victimization than cisgender households.
One in four transgender women who were victimized thought the incident was a hate crime.
