Seeking to Adopt in Florida
Lesbian and gay parents navigate the legal process
May 2014
This study explores parents’ experiences navigating the legal and social service systems after the repeal of Florida’s ban on gay and lesbian adoption. The study is based on interviews with 22 lesbian and gay parents in the state. It was published in the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Studies in February 2014.
Highlights
A Florida statute enacted in 1977 prohibited LGB people from adopting until it was struck down by a court in 2010.
Participants reported both positive and negative experiences in seeking out lawyers and in working with social service agencies and the courts.
Findings suggest that practitioners should aim to become well-versed in the most current legal changes impacting same-sex parents.
