Al Rowland, Ph.D., is a Research Data Analyst at the Williams Institute. Their research focuses on international human rights, (de)criminalization, and other issues impacting LGBTQ people. Before joining the Williams Institute, they conducted participatory action research with sex workers in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. They provide practical abortion support, programming, and evaluation for community-based organizations, and their work has been supported by the Haynes Foundation, the Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies, and the Center for Organizational Research at UC Irvine, among others. Al’s research has been published in Sexuality Research and Social Policy, Diálogo com a Economia Criativa, and the Routledge International Handbook of Critical Policing Studies. It is forthcoming in the SAGE Encyclopedia of Politics and Gender. They earned their Ph.D. and M.S. in Political Science from UC Irvine.
