Geriatrics group issues call to end discrimination against gay seniors

The American Geriatrics Society on Thursday called for renewed efforts to combat discrimination against older gay people that can hinder their ability to receive adequate health care.
The society’s ethics committee issued a statement saying the time had come to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people no longer face the sort of discrimination that can include refusal of care, exclusion of their partners from hospital visitation or failing to recognize nontraditional, appointed caregivers as surrogates who can make important health-care decisions for them if they are incapacitated.
