About this Project
This project examined the differences and similarities of school experiences and other characteristics of LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ youth in public middle and high schools in the Bay Area region in California.
About the Data
Analysis below was conducted using 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 annual California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) data. This data are only representative of the students who participated in the survey and are not representative of the region.
SCHOOL EXPERIENCE OUTCOMES BY LGBTQ AND NON-LGBTQ YOUTH IN THE BAY AREA
LGBTQ youth in the Bay Area experienced lower levels of school connectedness and meaningful participation at school compared to their non-LGBTQ classmates. They also reported worse grades and more school absences than their non-LGBTQ counterparts, and experienced higher rates of school victimization than non-LGBTQ youth. When asked whether they felt school was safe, LGBTQ youth reported feeling less safe than their non-LGBTQ peers.
