The Williams Institute seeks a law fellow to engage in cutting-edge and high-quality research and analysis related to litigation, legislation, and policy developments concerning sexual orientation and gender identity in the United States. The Daniel. H. Renberg Law Fellow will further the Williams Institute’s mission by producing impactful legal and multi-disciplinary research on discrimination and disparities facing LGBTQ populations, LGBTQ families, criminal justice, and immigration, among other issues. The Law Fellow will disseminate research through scholarly publications, amicus briefs, regulatory processes, public speaking, and other means. The position will be based in Los Angeles, California.
The nation’s leading research center on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy, the Williams Institute produces rigorous and independent research with real-world relevance and disseminates it to judges, legislators, policymakers, media, and the public. Research from the Williams Institute has impacted a wide variety of law and policy issues: For example, the U.S. Supreme Court and numerous other federal courts, when they struck down state prohibitions on marriage for same-sex couples, relied on Williams Institute research that was presented to the courts through our amicus briefs as well as expert testimony; President Obama relied on Williams Institute research when issuing an Executive Order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity; and Williams Institute research helped form the legislative record supporting passage by Congress of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The Daniel H. Renberg Law Fellow will support the research and activities of the senior legal scholars at the Williams Institute. Under the guidance of the senior legal scholars at the Williams Institute, the Law Fellow will:
- Conduct legal and multi-disciplinary research
- Co-author legal scholarship, articles, and commentary for a variety of publications
- Prepare and serve as co-counsel on amicus briefs for filing in significant court cases
- Draft model legislation and prepare testimony on federal, state, and local legislation
- Engage with governmental agencies on regulations and other types of law and policy
- Communicate with the media and the public, such as communicating with the press on breaking issues impacting LGBTQ people and representing the Williams Institute at public speaking engagements
- Contribute to the development of ideas for legal and scholarly research
- Organize education programs
- Assist in grant writing and other development activities
- Take on other duties as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications
- JD degree required
- Dual degree (e.g. MPP, MPH, MS) with empirical research training (i.e., study design, statistical analysis) preferred
- Attorney admitted to practice law in California preferred
- Demonstrated experience with or substantive knowledge of legal issues involving sexual orientation, gender identity, and LGBTQ populations in the United States required
- Demonstrated ability to produce the highest-caliber legal research and writing required
- Excellent skill in speaking effectively and persuasively to individuals and groups required
- Initiative and good judgment required
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work effectively under conditions of heavy workload, frequent interruptions, distractions, and deadlines required
- Knowledge of LGBTQ legal and political community both in Los Angeles and nationwide preferred
- Ability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends as needed to fulfill job responsibilities required
