With contributions from Williams Distinguished Scholar Gary Gates, “Still Caught in the Storm” is a report released by the Southern AIDS Coalition National Policy Center focusing on the ongoing epidemic of HIV/AIDS among gay and bisexual men in the 16 Southern states and the District of Columbia. The report provides new estimates of the numbers of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) living in each state, the portion living with HIV or AIDS, and the steps that could be taken to stem the tide of new infections. The new research shows that an estimated 1 in 14 Southern men who have sex with men (MSM) are living with HIV/AIDS and black men having the largest percentage of infections. According to the report, 1 in 5 black MSM are living with HIV/AIDS compared with 1 in 16 Hispanic MSM, and 1 in 22 white MSM.
