Pentagon moves to allow transgender troops to serve openly

The Pentagon is opening the door for transgender troops to serve in the military, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Monday, continuing a wave of expansion in opportunity under President Barack Obama.
And there likely won’t be much opposition on Capitol Hill, with Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) saying he has no major objections.
Still, the Arizona Republican, who in 2010 was a chief opponent of the Obama administration’s efforts to repeal the ban on gays serving openly in the military, said his panel would be taking a close look at the Pentagon’s plans.
