About: This talk will discuss the methods and findings from the Social Justice Sexuality Project, one of the largest ever national surveys of Black, Latina/o, and Asian and Pacific Islander, and multiracial lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. With over 5,000 respondents, the final sample includes respondents from all 50 states; Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico; in rural and suburban areas, in addition to large urban areas; and from a variety of ages, racial/ethnic identities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.

Juan Battle is a Professor of Sociology, Public Health & Urban Education at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (C.U.N.Y.). He is also the Coordinator of the Africana Studies Certificate Program. His research focuses on race, sexuality, and social justice.  Among his current projects, he is heading the Social Justice Sexuality initiative – a project exploring the lived experiences of Black, Latina/o, and Asian lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the United States and Puerto Rico. He is a recent Fulbright Senior Specialist and was the Fulbright Distinguished Chair of Gender Studies at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria; and is an Affiliate Faculty of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. He is a former president of the Association of Black Sociologists and is actively involved with the American Sociological Association (ASA). He received his A.S. and B.S. from York College of Pennsylvania.  His M.A. and PhD were both received from the University of Michigan.
